What do these website terms mean?

A banner is an image displayed at the top of a webpage, and it's one of the first things your visitors see when they visit your website. Depending on your chosen design, you can opt to have your banner span the full width of a page or align it with your content. To learn more about content, scroll further down.

Large banners are a current trend in website design, which is why all our Design templates include this feature. Choose from a library of free stock images using our tool or simply upload your own. Just make sure you choose a good quality image. You can even add text (with a sub-header) or a button to your banner.

A browser is a program that lets you visit websites via the internet. The most commonly-used browsers are Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari (Apple). Mobile versions of these browsers are also available. If you don't have a browser installed on your phone already, you can easily download one.

Everything you put on your website - text, images, forms, products, etc. - is the content. When you're building your website with Webador, the content section is where you place elements.

You can edit your website content whenever you want. Whether it's adding text, deleting products, resizing images - it's up to you. We recommend updating your content regularly to maintain a good rank in Google search results.

A domain name is the unique address (after www.) that leads to your website, e.g. webador.com. Every domain name is unique, so you can't register one that already exists. This also means no-one can use your domain once you've registered it.

Domain names are not case sensitive, and they're always displayed in lowercase in your address bar. You can enter website address in uppercase or lowercase - you'll still get where you want to go. Finally, domain name extensions vary. The .co.uk extension is widely-used in the UK, while US websites tend to use .com. Besides countries, there are extensions such as .biz and .net. 

The bottom section of your website is called the footer. Most of our Design templates show this in a different color so it's easily recognizable. The footer is usually the same on every page of your website, and is mostly used to display information such as contact details, links to terms and conditions, and social media buttons.

The company that 'hosts' your website actually manages everything to do with the site, and your website and associated domain name are stored on your host's server. A a Webador customer, your website is stored on our server. This server is connected to the internet, and can be seen as a kind of computer that's switched on 24 hours a day.

Thanks to this server, your website can be accessed by anyone in the world - all they have to do is type in your domain name.

HyperText Markup Language, or HTML, is a programming language for the web that can be used to build websites. In principle, you don't need any knowledge of HTML to use Webador. With our editor, you can build a great website without using any HTML at all.

However, you may want to add something to your site that we don't have a specific element for, such as a visitor counter. HTML code, which you can write yourself or simply copy from the internet, allows you to add such features. You can then place the code on your website using our Embed Code element.

These terms are used in HTML code to specify header sizes. Webador uses Heading 1 (H1), Heading 2 (H2), and Heading 3 (H3). Heading 1 is the largest and 3 is the smallest. These headers also benefit your website's search engine optimization by helping search engines determine what your website and pages are about.

Every site made with Webador uses responsive design, which means the website automatically adapts to the size of the screen used. Websites with responsive design can therefore be viewed on PCs, laptops, tablets, and mobile devices.

It's easy to see whether a website has responsive design. If you have to zoom in to read the text when browsing a website on mobile, this means the site doesn't use responsive design and is therefore not mobile-friendly.

It is also a positive indication to Google if you have a mobile-friendly website. In fact, these days, websites that do not have responsive design are rated worse by Google, causing them to drop in the search results list.

Search Engine Optimizations, or SEO, is the practice of making your website more attractive to search engines. The order in which you see websites in Google search results is determined by Google itself. While there are many theories regarding the criteria used to determine which websites rank higher than others, Google has not officially revealed this. 

That said, it's long been established that a coherent website with quality content is the best way to improve your performance in search engine results. So, make sure your website's aim and purpose is clearly stated, along with any products and services you offer.

A sitemap is comparable to a table of contents in a book - essentially, a list of the pages on your website. Webador automatically forwards your website's sitemap to Google for inclusion in search engine results. You can also place a sitemap on your website yourself using our Sitemap element.

When you place the Sitemap element on your site, a list of links to all your pages will display automatically. The sitemap can be placed on its own page, or (more commonly) at the bottom of your website in the footer.

An SSL connection is a secure connection for your website, which is especially important when your visitors need to enter personal information such as payment or contact details. All Webador sites have a secure connection, which is indicated by a padlock in the address bar followed by https:// at the beginning of the URL (instead of http://).

Websites with a secure SSL connection also rank higher in search engine results.
